There are plenty of robot/artificial intelligence movies out there in the world, but none of them appear to be quite like Robots, if the movie’s trailer is any indication.

The film stars Shailene Woodley (Divergent, Big Little Lies) and Jack Whitehall (Jungle Cruise, Bad Education and the upcoming second season of The Afterparty) as two narcissist human beings who have robot doppelgangers who do their bidding… until they don’t.

Here’s the movie’s short-yet-descriptive synopsis:

Charles is a womanizer while Elaine is a gold digger. The duo learn humanity when forced to team up and pursue robot doubles of themselves.

What the above doesn’t belie is that this movie is very clearly a comedy. There are more than a couple of funny moments in the trailers, and Charles and Elaine appear to be obnoxiously hilarious while their robot counterparts are robots who fall in love and go rogue after going off-program. There’s enough here to make me eager to watch this feature from NEON; whether the full movie lives up to the trailer’s hype, however, remains to be seen.

Robots is written and directed by Art Hines and Casper Christensen (the former of whom co-wrote Borat and multiple other Sacha Baron Cohen projects) and will be available for your viewing pleasure both in theaters and digitally on-demand starting on May 19, 2023.

In the meantime, here’s the movie’s poster:
